What are the sills for?

In the process of renovating a house or apartment, different floor coverings are used in different rooms.

Recently, most people increasingly use laminate flooring as a floor covering. This is due to its versatility and ease of installation.

During the renovation, joints of various types of coatings appear, such as laminate, tile, linoleum, carpet.

& nbsp; Each flooring has its own advantages. Parquet and board are distinguished by their natural beauty, carpet is soft and safe, ceramic tiles are durable and moisture resistant. So you have to combine several materials in your home, trying not to break the interior harmony when making joints and not turn walking around the apartment into overcoming an obstacle course.

Expansion gaps, butt joints, interior connections, transitions to another type of coating, stairs - all this requires additional details. For this, a special decorative sill comes in handy.

Benefits of using a nut:

  • transforms the floor surface between rooms into a single whole, creates a smooth transition from laminate to tile or linoleum;
  • prevents debris and dirt from accumulating in the joint seams between the two types of coatings, protects the edges of laminated boards from mechanical damage.
  • visually levels the difference in coverings of different heights and connects the space of the rooms into a single whole.
  • makes the floor smooth and the transitions between rooms safe.

There is a huge variety of decorative sills: plastic PVC sills, metal, wooden, cork, MDF sills and rubber.

The most common are aluminum sills - lightweight, reliable, easy to install, characterized by high strength, long service life, a variety of colors and versatility.

Varieties of thresholds:

  • Straight sill for flat surfaces or masking expansion joints. They have two ways of fixing - open and hidden. Both types firmly attach the finish to the floor, but with a hidden method, the threshold becomes almost invisible, maintaining the visual impression of the integrity of the laminate.

  • tiered nut. Such a sill is necessary to equalize the differences between the separately laid coatings. The difference in height can be between 1.5 and 15 mm. The split-level nut is of the transitional type and has either a traditional or non-standard design. Its task is to close the edges of the surface from possible damage, to level out visually the difference in floor height and to secure the transition from one coating to another (so that there is less stumbling).

  • Corner . Designed to decorate walls and stairs. They have a variety of sizes and a rich palette. Their task is to close the cuts of laminated boards that form a rung of a staircase, or located near a wall. Quite often, these corners are made of non-slip material in order to secure the passage up the stairs. Sometimes this element becomes decorative or edging, it can take over the functions of a skirting board.

  • Special . The Z-shaped profile allows you to connect curly decorative cuts, or for the design of wireless laying of uniform coatings, monochromatic or different colors, similar in density and thickness. Swallow joint is a universal semicircular profile for joints of any surfaces. Concealed Mount Carpet Holder - Used to secure carpet runners on stair treads.

  • Edging . The edging, or edge, threshold for flooring is the finishing of open edges, one of the applications is the design of stair steps. This type of threshold closes the cuts of laminated boards when leaving the balcony, for edging the edges in the hallway, when finishing the podium.
    & nbsp; & nbsp;
  • Dirt-resistant and anti-slip . They are used to prevent people from slipping while moving, to protect the step angle from stress and damage, and prevent dirt from entering the room. Advantages: provide a safe descent from the stairs; cleanse some of the dirt from shoes; take on the step load, protect the steps from abrasion; resistant to temperature extremes; ease of installation; serve as an element of decor, decorate the general view of the entrance.

What else should you pay attention to when choosing a nut?

  • Moisture resistance. If it is necessary to decorate the joint between the laminate in the corridor and ceramic tiles in the bathroom or kitchen, then the sill must be moisture resistant. Excess moisture is not a problem for aluminum sills.
  • Traffic level . PVC sills may not withstand high activity of movement, and aluminum sills will do an excellent job of this task and will serve you for many years.
  • Colors. Color plays a key role in the design of any interior. It should be harmonious and emphasize the comfort of your home.
